North Macedonia | HEMA-ONKO

HEMA-ONKO is a national patient organisation dedicated to supporting people affected by cancer and their caregivers throughout North Macedonia. Founded in 2018 as HEMA and expanded in 2022 to become HEMA-ONKO, the organisation works to improve awareness, education, patient support, access to treatment and quality of life for people affected by cancer.

In 2022, HEMA-ONKO established an online breast cancer community that today connects more than 2,500 women living with and beyond breast cancer. Supported by a dedicated network of breast cancer survivors, volunteers, caregivers and healthcare professionals, the community provides peer support, trusted information, education and advocacy for women across Macedonia.

Picnic in the parc

For three consecutive years HEMA-ONKO has organised the Pink Picnic Breakfast in Skopje City Park.

HEMA-ONKO's annual Breast Cancer Breakfast provides a supportive space where women living with breast cancer can connect, share experiences, and support one another. The event reinforces the message that no woman should face breast cancer alone while also promoting awareness of early detection and breast health.

Educational Events Across North Macedonia

Recognising that access to information and support is often limited outside Skopje, HEMA-ONKO has organised educational events across the country for women affected by breast cancer.

Key topics included:

  • Early detection and breast health awareness
  • Understanding treatment and survivorship
  • Breast reconstruction options
  • Lymphedema awareness and management
  • Patient rights and access to care
  • Challenges faced by women outside major cities
Art Therapy, Wellbeing and Empowerment

Supporting Emotional Wellbeing and Confidence

Living with and beyond breast cancer affects more than physical health. Through art therapy workshops, peer support activities, and fashion events, HEMA-ONKO creates opportunities for women to reconnect with themselves, build confidence, share experiences, and celebrate life beyond cancer.
