Romania | Fundatia Renasterea

The Renasterea Foundation is an NGO which was established in September 2001, and it was recognised as a Public Utility Organisation by Government Decision in 2007. Its mission is to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast and cervical cancer and to provide free access to screening, diagnosis and counselling for patients and their families.

The Renasterea Foundation has been developing and implementing innovative programmes aimed at increasing awareness, education and access to screening and medical care for women in Romania. For the last 19 years, the Foundation has made great achievements in informing women about the importance of early detection in curing breast cancer and providing free of charge medical investigation for underprivileged women and for cancer patients, in its two medical centres . On top of that that, the Foundation, with the generous support of its partners, has managed to set up its own outreach opportunistic screening program in an effort to provide access to early detection and diagnostic medical investigation for women living in rural areas of the country, where the rate of breast cancer death is high, due to late diagnosis.

One of our most valued programmes is offering wigs made of natural hair to our oncological patients. We have implemented a system through which we collect hair donated in beauty salons, we fundraise for the production of wigs and then we donate finished products to patients.

Mobile Diagnosis Unit

In 2008 Renasterea Foundation started the - Mobile Diagnosis Unit project that travels across the country to provide free-of-charge medical investigation for women.

In Romania doesn’t exist a National Breast Screening Program. Cervical Cancer Screening Program exist, but it is not accessible to women all over the country.

Through Renasterea Mobile Unit program – more than 35.000 free-of-charge medical tests were performed (11.000 mammograms and breast ultrasounds and 24.000 pap smear tests). In October 2022, with the support of Intimissimi Romania, 420 medical investigations (breast ultrasounds and Pap Smear Tests) were offered for three weeks. In November and December, with the help of Globalworth Foundation and CEZ Romania, more than 1000 Pap Smear Tests were provided free of charge for women living in rural areas from Valcea county.

This project helped to increase access to screening services by offering 1210 PapSmear tests and 210 breast ultrasounds free of charge and raising awareness about the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of breast/ genital cancer through a social media campaign developed in partnership with a famous Romanian Influencer that visited the Mobile Unit at the beginning of the campaign.
