The city of Tallinn will receive the PINK CITY recognition
October 12, 2021 | Think Pink Europe and MTÜ Elu Nimel are presenting PINK CITY recognition to the city of Tallinn, the first city to receive it in Estonia.
The Pink City title will be awarded by Think Pink Europe and sub-organizations in different Member States to the cities that supported them in Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaigns and the RACE For The Cure .
"It is a recognition and a sign that the city is thinking alongside and supporting health projects designed to raise awareness of breast cancer and it's prevention. The contribution of the city of Tallinn was in spreading the message and in the form of pink lighting solutions on Vabaduse Square and Tallinn Lauluväljak. It has given us powerful emotions and has drawn attention to breast cancer issues, "said Reio Vilipuu, Chairman of the Board of MTÜ Elu Nimel. "This year, the Skywheel of Tallinn was also illuminated in pink, and all objects have a positive buzz on social media."
Betina Beškina, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn, who is in charge of social and health care, thanked the city of Tallinn for the recognition and title given. "But above all, I would like to warmly acknowledge all those who contribute to raising awareness of breast cancer prevention, among other things, by promoting healthy lifestyles and daily physical activity," said Beškina. "Unfortunately, breast cancer is the most common malignancy among Estonian women, and almost 800 new cases occur every year. The least that each of us and the collaboration can do is pay attention to this serious disease and emphasize the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Although it is difficult to detect the disease, it is not impossible - and most importantly, today mammography is available in Estonia to everyone, including those who do not have national health insurance. Women are also invited to screening program every year, so please go to checkup if possible, because early-diagnosed breast cancer is fully treatable. ”
Talking about breast cancer reduces fears and helps to raise early detection statistics, as one in eight women develops the disease in their lifetime. The PINK CITY title will be handed over to the city today at 13:00 in Vabaduse väljak 7 in the press-center on the first floor.
